The Story of the Dodge Brothers: How It All Began
Meet the Dodge Brothers
When you think of powerful Dodge vehicles like the Dodge Durango or Dodge Challenger, you have two brothers to thank: John Francis Dodge and Horace Elgin Dodge.
They helped create the Dodge brand, which is now known for building strong, reliable cars and trucks.
Let’s take a look at their journey and how it led to the Dodge vehicles we know and love today.
Growing Up and Early Work
John and Horace Dodge grew up in Niles, Michigan. Their dad owned a machine shop, so they learned about tools and machines from a young age.
In 1886, their family moved to Detroit, Michigan, where the brothers worked hard in factories. They learned how to fix and build machines, and they quickly became skilled workers.
Before Building Cars: Bicycles and Machine Parts
Before they made cars, the Dodge brothers built bicycles. Horace created a special dirt-proof ball bearing that made their bikes better than others.
With John’s business skills and Horace’s creative ideas, they started the Evans & Dodge Bicycle Company.
Later, they sold the bike company and opened a machine shop in Detroit. They started making parts for cars, and their work caught the attention of big car companies.
Helping Build Oldsmobile and Ford
The Dodge brothers first made transmissions for the Oldsmobile company. They did such a great job that Ford Motor Company asked them to help build engines and other parts for Ford cars.
From 1903 to 1913, the Dodge brothers worked closely with Ford. They even became part-owners of the company! Their shop grew so big that they had to open a second factory to keep up with orders.
Starting Their Own Car Company
In 1913, John and Horace Dodge decided it was time to make their own cars. They wanted to build vehicles that were stronger and better than the ones already on the road.
In 1914, they introduced the Dodge Model 30, a car made to compete with Ford’s famous Model T. During World War I, they also built trucks and ambulances to help the military.
After the war, they focused on making vehicles for everyday people — and Dodge became a popular name in America.
What Happened After the Dodge Brothers Passed Away
Sadly, both Dodge brothers died in 1920 because of the flu. Their families later sold the company to a group of investors.
However, these investors didn’t know much about making cars, and Dodge began to struggle.
In 1928, Walter P. Chrysler bought the Dodge company and saved it. Dodge became part of the Chrysler group, and the brand started focusing more on performance, style, and strong trucks and cars.
During World War II, Dodge built vehicles to help the military again. After the war, Dodge returned to making fast, powerful cars — something it’s still known for today.
Dodge Today: A Brand Built on Strength
Thanks to John and Horace Dodge’s hard work, Dodge grew into a brand known for performance, toughness, and innovation.
From muscle cars like the Dodge Charger and Challenger to family-friendly SUVs like the Durango, Dodge keeps pushing forward while honoring its strong roots.

A Brief History of Top Mopar Muscle Cars
What Does “Mopar” Really Mean?
When you hear “Mopar,” you probably think of powerful muscle cars. But the term actually dates back to the 1930s, when Chrysler introduced “MoPar Antifreeze” — a mashup of “motor” and “parts.” Originally a brand for Chrysler parts, Mopar later grew into a name that represents the entire Chrysler family, including Dodge, Plymouth, Ram, and now even Jeep vehicles.
Today, Mopar is practically a symbol of American muscle car performance. Let’s take a look at some of the most iconic Mopar muscle cars ever made.
1955 Chrysler 300: The First Muscle Car?
Before “muscle car” was even a popular term, the 1955 Chrysler 300 was setting the standard. Featuring a Hemi V-8 engine producing 300 horsepower, it could hit 130 mph — an incredible achievement for the 1950s.
Though only around 1,100 were built, the Chrysler 300 helped Chrysler enter the NASCAR scene and secured its place as a Mopar legend.
1969 Dodge Charger Daytona: A NASCAR Icon
The 1969 Dodge Charger Daytona is a favorite among Mopar enthusiasts for good reason. Powered by either a 7.2-liter Magnum or a 7-liter Hemi V-8 engine, this beast could produce up to 425 horsepower.
It became the first car in NASCAR history to break the 200-mph mark, cementing its legacy as one of the greatest muscle cars ever built.
1970 Plymouth Hemi Cuda: Raw Power
Before the oil crisis shifted the car market, Plymouth unleashed the 1970 Hemi Cuda. Packing a 7-liter Hemi V-8 with 475 horsepower, it could rocket from 0-60 mph in just 5.8 seconds and easily surpass 155 mph.
Although its time in the spotlight was short, the Hemi Cuda remains one of the most celebrated Mopar muscle cars in history.
1978 Dodge Lil’ Red Express: Muscle Truck
Yes, even a pickup truck earned a place in Mopar muscle history! The 1978 Dodge Lil’ Red Express packed a 5.9-liter V-8 producing 225 horsepower. It could hit 0-60 mph in 7.5 seconds — faster than many cars at the time.
Car and Driver even named it the fastest American-made vehicle from 0-100 mph in 1978, proving muscle isn’t limited to cars.
1996 Dodge Viper GTS: Modern Muscle Legend
The 1996 Dodge Viper GTS brought Mopar muscle into the modern era with an 8-liter V-10 engine pumping out 450 horsepower. It could go from 0-60 mph in just four seconds and reach speeds up to 177 mph.
With only about 1,100 built, the Viper GTS is now a rare and highly sought-after Mopar machine.
2015 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat & 2015 Dodge Charger Hellcat: Twin Terrors
In 2015, Dodge unleashed two monsters: the Challenger SRT Hellcat and the Charger Hellcat. Both packed a 6.2-liter supercharged V-8 producing 707 horsepower.
- Challenger SRT Hellcat: 0-60 mph in 3.6 seconds, top speed of 199 mph
- Charger Hellcat: Top speed of 204 mph, making it the world’s fastest production sedan at the time
These two vehicles proved that Mopar’s muscle car spirit was alive and stronger than ever.

How Fast Is the 2025 Charger Daytona?
The 2025 Charger Daytona EV is available in two main trims: R/T and Scat Pack.
- R/T Coupe: Reaches 0-60 mph in 4.7 seconds
- Scat Pack Coupe: Reaches 0-60 mph in an incredible 3.3 seconds
Dodge is also preparing four-door versions, which may be just a tick slower — but will still offer outstanding performance for a sedan.
Looking further ahead, Dodge is working on a special high-performance model called the SRT Banshee, expected to launch for the 2026 model year. Stay tuned for more news!
2025 Dodge Charger Daytona Performance Specs
Underneath its bold new look, the Charger Daytona is packed with serious muscle:
- Dual Electric Motors (front and rear)
- 400-volt system
- 93.9 kWh battery pack
- Standard All-Wheel Drive
Power outputs include:
- R/T Trim: 456 horsepower (boosts to 496 hp for 15 seconds)

Special features like Drift Mode, Donut Mode, Line Lock, and Launch Control make it even more exciting to drive. And if you choose the Track Package, you’ll get 20-inch wheels wrapped in Goodyear Eagle F1 Supercar 3 tires for maximum grip on the pavement or the track.
How Does the Charger Daytona Compare to Gas-Powered Muscle Cars?
If you’re wondering whether the Charger Daytona EV can outshine traditional gas-powered muscle cars, the answer is yes.
- 2023 Charger Scat Pack (Gas): 0-60 mph in 3.8 seconds
- Charger Hellcat Redeye (Gas): 0-60 mph in 3.5 seconds
- 2025 Charger Daytona Scat Pack (EV): 0-60 mph in just 3.3 seconds
Even compared to gas-powered legends like the Hellcat Redeye, the Charger Daytona’s instant electric torque gives it the edge in acceleration — despite the Redeye having nearly 800 horsepower!
Other popular sedans like the Chrysler 300 simply can’t keep up. The V-6 version of the Chrysler 300 takes around 6.5 seconds to hit 60 mph, while its top V-8 engine manages 4.3 seconds.
Why 0-60 MPH Times Matter
Understanding a vehicle’s 0-60 time gives you a clear picture of its overall performance. Whether you’re cruising around Benton, hitting the open highways of Arkansas, or planning a weekend at the track, knowing your car can launch quickly adds extra excitement and confidence to every drive.
Thanks to electric power, the Charger Daytona delivers instant torque, helping it leap off the line faster than many higher-horsepower, gas-powered rivals.
